Named for Father Bruno Doerfler, who led German Catholic settlers from Minnesota in 1902 as part of the St. Peter's Colony. The town's Bruno Clayworks (1905-1960s) made over a million distinctive interlocking 'T' bricks. Today Bruno is home to about 604 people.

Father Bruno Doerfler went on to serve as Abbot of the Territorial Abbey of Saint Peter-Muenster from 1911 to 1919, and the abbey territory that included Bruno was known as St. Peter's Colony. The land around the town is gently rolling, with roughly 80% of it farmed and the rest in aspen groves, wetlands and prairie.
