Originally 'Pile-of-Bones' (Cree Oskana ka-asasteki, 'the place where bones are piled'), renamed Regina - Latin for 'queen' - in 1882 for Queen Victoria. Today Regina is home to about 226,404 people. Provincial capital: government and Crown corporations (SaskPower, SaskEnergy, SaskTel), the Co-op Refinery, RCMP Depot, agriculture and insurance. Wascana Centre and Lake, the Saskatchewan Legislative Building, the RCMP Heritage Centre, the Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium.

Regina was made the territorial seat of government in 1882 by Lieutenant Governor Edgar Dewdney, who chose it over the better developed Battleford, Troy and Fort Qu'Appelle. The site was then called Pile-of-Bones, in Cree Oskana ka-asasteki, and was described at the time as arid and featureless grassland.
