It began in 1939 when Isaac Martens and his son Dave sold three small parcels of land north of Saskatoon, became a village in 1966, a town in 1969 and a city in 2009, and now holds 3,639 occupied private dwellings.
Martensville covers 13.56 square kilometres and had a population density of 777.9 people per square kilometre at the 2021 census, which is dense for a city that was farmland inside living memory. The community exists because Isaac Martens and his son Dave saw that people working in Saskatoon wanted to live outside it, and it has never really stopped being that.
