An early-1900s railroad town. When the line closed in 1989 it stranded three grain elevators; one survives as the Museum of Wheat, a 1928 Saskatchewan Wheat Pool elevator. (Bethany College, a Mennonite Brethren school, operated here until 2015.) Today Hepburn is home to about 784 people. Agricultural - wheat farming and grain handling. The Hepburn Museum of Wheat (a converted 1928 grain elevator); the former Bethany College campus.
Its population history runs in waves: over 800 before the 1930s, under 300 by the end of that decade after the Depression and drought, and 784 at the 2021 census after a 14% rise in five years.
Hepburn exists because of a railway station, and the Museum of Wheat that survives from that era now tells the story of the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, the Canadian National Railway and the farmers who used both. The town packs 687.7 people per square kilometre, which for a prairie town of 784 means houses sit close together on small lots.
