Hepburn began in the early 1900s as a railroad station, and main street still ends at the grain elevator the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool built in 1928 beside the Canadian National line.
The province shut that line down in 1989. Two of the three elevators it left stranded were torn down, and the 1928 one became the Museum of Wheat. Bethany College, a small Bible college, closed in May 2015. At the 2021 census Hepburn had 276 private dwellings, 268 of them lived in, all on 1.14 square kilometres.
Those houses weren't built in one go. The population passed 800 before the 1930s and was under 300 by the end of that decade, after the Depression and the drought, and Hepburn grew again after the Second World War, with new homes going up. The latest stretch was 14% growth between 2016 and 2021. So before we spec a replacement we pin down the age on the house itself, not from the street. Hepburn School marked its 75th anniversary in 2001, which dates the school to the mid-1920s, when the town was near its pre-Depression peak of more than 800 people. At the 2021 census Hepburn had 784 residents, up from 688 in 2016, which puts it back near the size it was when the school opened. On one of the older houses from that first peak a replacement starts at the deck, and the old shingles come off with every patch put on them over the years.
