Regina carries the heaviest storm record in the country. On 30 June 1912 a tornado roughly 150 metres wide, estimated at F4 and with winds put near 400 km/h, formed south of the city and tore through the residential area between Wascana Lake and Victoria Avenue, then through the downtown business district, the rail yards, the warehouse district and the northern residential streets. Twenty-eight people were killed and about 300 injured, and it is still the deadliest tornado in Canadian history.

Modern summers are ordinary by that standard, but the exposure has not changed: the city is on open plain with no natural windbreak, and its heaviest rain falls May through August with June averaging about 75 mm. Newer subdivisions in the northwest and southeast were built with landscaped lagoons rather than spring runoff storm sewers, which changes where the water from your roof ends up. The city sits on open plain and every one of its roughly 300,000 trees was planted by hand, with the American elm the dominant species.
