What storm season actually does in Regina
Regina carries the heaviest storm record in the country. On 30 June 1912 a tornado roughly 150 metres wide, estimated at F4 and with winds put near 400 km/h, formed south of the city and tore through the residential area between Wascana Lake and Victoria Avenue, then through the downtown business district, the rail yards, the warehouse district and the northern residential streets. Twenty-eight people were killed and about 300 injured, and it is still the deadliest tornado in Canadian history.
Modern summers are ordinary by that standard, but the exposure has not changed: the city is on open plain with no natural windbreak, and its heaviest rain falls May through August with June averaging about 75 mm. Newer subdivisions in the northwest and southeast were built with landscaped lagoons rather than spring runoff storm sewers, which changes where the water from your roof ends up. One more thing decides storm damage in Regina, and it is the tree canopy.
The city sits on open plain and every one of its roughly 300,000 trees was planted by hand, with the American elm the dominant species. Dutch elm disease has now reached the prairies and is being held back by pest management, which means a lot of large, mature and in some cases weakened elms stand directly over roofs. The most recent big hail day was Tuesday, June 9, 2026, early in the evening. Environment Canada's biggest report was golf ball-sized hail. One homeowner timed it at 15 to 20 minutes, and it landed mostly on the north, northwest and central parts of the city. By June 19 SGI had 800 property claims on its books next to 10,000 auto claims, most of them out of the northwest, and expected the bill to pass $80 million. Five days after that its president called it over $100 million as an early estimate. On houses, much of the damage was to eavestroughs, shingles and siding, and some downspouts had holes poked right through them.
