Weather has flattened parts of Regina before. The Regina Cyclone formed 18 km south of the city on June 30, 1912 and cut through the houses between Wascana Lake and Victoria Avenue, then downtown and the warehouse district; around 500 buildings were destroyed or damaged. The city started out as Pile-of-Bones, Oskana ka-asasteki in Cree, and was renamed Regina, Latin for queen, in 1882.
