Saskatoon roofing

Storm and hail damage is what we handle most, and Saskatoon sees its share. The August 2025 system put 10,000+ lightning strikes over the city in a day; severe prairie thunderstorms here regularly produce plow winds (downbursts up to EF2, strong enough to lift a roof) and hail. Average ~91 cm of snow a year, with dry windblown snow drifting unevenly across roof planes (NBC 1-in-50 ground snow load 1.5 kPa). Winter lows near -20C with freeze-thaw cycling at the eaves.

Here is the problem with hail: the damage that matters is usually the damage you cannot see from the driveway. Hail bruises the mat under the granules. Those bruises shed granules, expose the asphalt to the sun, and turn into leaks a year or two down the road. Wind lifts and creases shingles and tears the ridge caps right off. We get up on your Saskatoon roof, mark every hit, photograph and video it, and give you a straight answer about whether you are looking at a repair or a full insurance restoration.

Most storm-damage roofs around Saskatoon are handled through an SGI or private insurance claim. We are HAAG Certified, which means we inspect the way an adjuster does and can tell real, storm-caused bruising from cosmetic marks. We document the damage thoroughly, meet your adjuster on site when it helps, and lay out a clear scope. No inflated claims, no games, just an accurate record so your policy covers what it should.

Once the claim is approved we strip the roof to the deck, check the plywood for rot, and rebuild it the way it should have been built the first time: ice and water shield along the eaves to stop ice damming, full synthetic underlayment, new drip edge, GAF shingles, and proper ventilation. Every restoration carries our 10-year workmanship warranty.

Why does it matter that a roofer actually knows Saskatoon? Founded 1883 as a Methodist temperance colony, named after the saskatoon berry. Saskatoon counted 115,619 private dwellings at the 2021 census with 107,052 of them occupied, so roughly 8,500 sat empty on census day. The city has been building continuously since the west-side town charter of 1903 and added 7.7% to its population in the five years to 2021, which means no single roof age dominates any part of it. We work out the age of your specific roof on site rather than assuming it from the postal code. Knowing the age of the housing and the way storms track across this part of Saskatchewan is what tells us how to spec your roof. We reach Saskatoon right here in the city, via Hwy 16 (Yellowhead) and Hwy 11 (Louis Riel Trail).

What a HAAG Certified storm inspection looks for

What we checkWhy it matters
Hail bruisingHail bruises the mat under the granules. You often cannot see it from the ground, but those bruises shed granules, expose the asphalt to UV, and turn into leaks a year or two later.
Wind damageWind lifts and creases shingles and tears off ridge caps. We get up there, mark every hit, and photograph it.
Cosmetic marks or real damageWe are HAAG Certified, so we inspect the way an adjuster does and can tell the difference between cosmetic marks and bruising that will cut your roof’s life short.
The deck underneathOnce a claim is approved we strip the roof to the deck and check the plywood for rot before anything new goes on.
Claim documentationWe document the damage with photos and video, meet your adjuster on site when it helps, and lay out the scope clearly. Most storm-damage roofs in Saskatchewan go through an SGI or private insurance claim.

Storm exposure

What storm season actually does in Saskatoon

Saskatoon's own climate record is blunt about the summer: thunderstorms are common through the warm months and can turn severe with torrential rain, hail, high winds, intense lightning and, on occasion, tornadoes. The city takes only 352.3 mm of precipitation across a year and most of it falls in summer, which means the water arrives fast rather than steadily. A cell that drops pea-sized or larger hail on one side of the river can leave the other side untouched, so we inspect the actual address rather than assume the storm track.

Hail rarely announces itself from the driveway. It bruises the asphalt mat under the granules, and the granule loss that follows is what shortens the roof by years. The river is the reason Saskatoon storm work is never one job.

The city straddles a bend in the South Saskatchewan and is divided into an east and a west side by it, and the two sides were not built in the same decades. The lowest ground in the city is the river itself and the highest is up in Sutherland-College Park, so a cell that tracks along the valley can hammer one bank and leave the other dry. We have 107,052 occupied dwellings to work across and no two neighbourhoods age at the same rate.

FAQs

Saskatoon storm & hail damage restoration questions

My Saskatoon roof took hail. What should I do first?
Call us for a free Saskatoon inspection at (306) 620-9709. The sooner we document it, the better, because insurance claims have deadlines and bruised shingles keep shedding granules. We will tell you honestly whether it is a claim or not.
Do you handle the SGI / insurance side in Saskatoon?
We document the damage on your Saskatoon roof with photos and video and work alongside your adjuster so the approved scope matches the real damage. The claim is yours; we make the roofing side simple.
What if my Saskatoon roof only has cosmetic marks?
Then we tell you that. As HAAG Certified inspectors we will not push a replacement your Saskatoon roof does not need.
