Yorkton roofing
Storm and hail damage is what we handle most, and Yorkton sees its share. Yorkton's marquee weather event is the flash-flood storm of July 1, 2010, when a severe thunderstorm flooded Broadway Street, with more flooding in June 2014 - a reminder of how fast intense summer storms overwhelm roofs, eaves and drainage here. It also sits in the Prairie hail season (May to September) and gets heavier snow than Regina at ~117 cm a year, so snow load and ice damming are real winter concerns.
Here is the problem with hail: the damage that matters is usually the damage you cannot see from the driveway. Hail bruises the mat under the granules. Those bruises shed granules, expose the asphalt to the sun, and turn into leaks a year or two down the road. Wind lifts and creases shingles and tears the ridge caps right off. We get up on your Yorkton roof, mark every hit, photograph and video it, and give you a straight answer about whether you are looking at a repair or a full insurance restoration.
Roofs we have finished

Most storm-damage roofs around Yorkton are handled through an SGI or private insurance claim. We are HAAG Certified, which means we inspect the way an adjuster does and can tell real, storm-caused bruising from cosmetic marks. We document the damage thoroughly, meet your adjuster on site when it helps, and lay out a clear scope. No inflated claims, no games, just an accurate record so your policy covers what it should.
Once the claim is approved we strip the roof to the deck, check the plywood for rot, and rebuild it the way it should have been built the first time: ice and water shield along the eaves to stop ice damming, full synthetic underlayment, new drip edge, GAF shingles, and proper ventilation. Every restoration carries our 10-year workmanship warranty.
Why does it matter that a roofer actually knows Yorkton? Named for the York Farmers Colonization Company, formed by Ontario businessmen in 1882. The settlement physically relocated in 1888-89 to meet the new rail line - a town that moved to the tracks. Yorkton counted 7,529 private dwellings at the 2021 census with 6,974 of them occupied, leaving over 500 empty. The city has been building since the colony relocated to the rail line in 1889 and was incorporated in 1928, so its housing spans more than a century with no dominant era. As a regional service centre it also carries a large stock of commercial and institutional roofs among the houses. Knowing the age of the housing and the way storms track across this part of Saskatchewan is what tells us how to spec your roof. We reach Yorkton 300 km southeast of Saskatoon, via Hwy 16 (Yellowhead) and Hwy 9.
What a HAAG Certified storm inspection looks for
| What we check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Hail bruising | Hail bruises the mat under the granules. You often cannot see it from the ground, but those bruises shed granules, expose the asphalt to UV, and turn into leaks a year or two later. |
| Wind damage | Wind lifts and creases shingles and tears off ridge caps. We get up there, mark every hit, and photograph it. |
| Cosmetic marks or real damage | We are HAAG Certified, so we inspect the way an adjuster does and can tell the difference between cosmetic marks and bruising that will cut your roof’s life short. |
| The deck underneath | Once a claim is approved we strip the roof to the deck and check the plywood for rot before anything new goes on. |
| Claim documentation | We document the damage with photos and video, meet your adjuster on site when it helps, and lay out the scope clearly. Most storm-damage roofs in Saskatchewan go through an SGI or private insurance claim. |

What storm season actually does in Yorkton
Yorkton has the clearest storm record of anywhere we work. On the evening of 1 July 2010 the city was put under a severe thunderstorm warning and then took pea sized hail, strong winds, lightning and heavy rain together. The flash flood that followed hit Broadway Street hardest, severely damaged local businesses and destroyed one of them, and the city declared a State of Emergency with the Canadian Red Cross assisting residents.
It happened again on the weekend of 29 June 2014, when flash floods across southeastern Saskatchewan brought a second State of Emergency. Storms here arrive with water and ice at the same time, and a roof that was only ever inspected for hail bruising misses half of what went wrong. Yorkton has moved once already because of where the water and the rail line were.
The York Farmers' Colonization Company founded York City in 1882 about 4 km northeast of the present city on the banks of the Little White Sand River, a post office was established in 1884 and the settlement renamed Yorkton to avoid confusion with York, Ontario, and in 1889 the whole townsite relocated alongside the newly extended rail line. Settlers came from eastern Canada, Manitoba, the United States, England, Scotland and Ireland, with Scottish settlers at Orkney to the west and a large Ukrainian-descended population arriving in the early twentieth century. More than a century of building later, the city has 6,974 occupied dwellings and no single dominant roof age.

We had a leaky roof and what we thought was going to be a total nightmare and financial disaster turned out to be a relaxing, stress-free and affordable process. Nathan kept communication going and was patient and knowledgeable when I was choosing shingles. We were so impressed we didn't bother getting quotes from other companies. It's W Contracting all the way!
We were fortunate to find W Contracting when we needed a roof replacement. An earlier company kept saying they'd start in a few days and then never showed up. Nathan and his crew were methodical and willing to do the little extras a shingling job requires. Prompt, quick, thorough, and left the site very tidy. A very solid 10 out of 10.
We had Nathan out for a hail estimate and the service was nothing short of remarkable. The estimate he provided, along with his knowledge and advice, was so thorough that even my insurance adjuster took note. I highly recommend W Contracting for all your roofing needs!
We had new shingles put on our home and had a very positive experience with Nathan and his crew. They have a great selection of shingles to choose from and a great warranty. Thank you for treating our home well and making the roof look great.
From repairing the roof, installing new shingles, clean-up and competitive pricing, they were professional and efficient in every step. Would trust them to do a roof anytime and will recommend them to everyone we know.
Nathan came out at 3 am to re-tarp my roof after the tarp was torn off in a storm. They did a fantastic job with everything, including clean up. I would fully recommend them. 5 plus stars.
Nathan was fast and efficient fixing my rain gutter after it blew down during the night! Very friendly, would definitely recommend.
Would recommend Nathan and his team to anyone looking for a quality roof job. They were very accommodating with my time frame, budget and the nature of the job. Left the site clean and tidy. A+
